How online slots work

Every online slot is a random number generator with a picture on top. When you press spin, the software has already selected the result; the reels are an animation of it. The game is built so that, over a very large number of spins, the total paid out equals a fixed percentage of the total staked. That percentage is the RTP.

The maths behind the game is set by the provider, not the casino, and it does not change according to the time of day, how long you have been playing, whether you are on a bonus or how recently the game paid a big win. Those beliefs are common and all of them are wrong.

What the casino does control is which version of a game it offers. Several major providers ship popular games with a choice of RTP settings, for example 96.5, 95.5 and 94 percent, and a casino can pick the lower one. The figure is always shown in the game's information panel (usually an "i" button), and it is worth checking, because two casinos can offer the same game at different returns.

RTP: what the figures mean

These are averages. The actual outcome of 1,000 spins varies enormously, especially on high-volatility games. But over months of play the expected loss is what it costs to play, and a game at 94 percent costs half as much again as one at 96 percent.

A few widely available games sit well above the norm: Blood Suckers (98 percent), 1429 Uncharted Seas (98.6 percent), Jackpot 6000 and Mega Joker (up to 98.9 and 99 percent respectively in their higher-stake modes) and Starmania (97.9 percent). They are older, simpler games and their high RTP is largely why they survive.

Progressive jackpot slots have low base RTP, often 88 to 92 percent, because a share of every stake feeds the jackpot pool. The jackpot contribution is part of the theoretical return, but you only receive it if you win the jackpot.

Volatility: choosing a game for your budget

Volatility, sometimes labelled variance, is a measure of how the return is distributed across spins. Providers usually rate it on a scale (low, medium, high, or 1 to 5), and it matters as much as RTP for how a session goes.

• Low volatility (Starburst, Blood Suckers, most classic three-reel games): frequent small wins, few dry spells, rarely more than 50 to 100 times stake. Suits small budgets and long sessions.
• Medium volatility (Book of Dead in its base game, Gonzo's Quest, Big Bass Bonanza): a balance, with occasional bonus rounds that can pay a few hundred times stake.
• High volatility (Dead or Alive 2, San Quentin, Mental, most Nolimit City and Hacksaw titles): long losing runs, then bonus rounds that can pay thousands of times stake. Maximum wins of 10,000x to 100,000x are advertised but hit rarely.

A useful rule: divide your session budget by the stake. On a high-volatility game you want at least 200 to 300 spins in the budget to have a reasonable chance of reaching a bonus round. On a low-volatility game 100 spins is plenty.

Bonus buy features, where you pay 50 to 200 times stake to trigger the bonus round immediately, are common on high-volatility games. The RTP of the buy is often slightly higher than the base game, but the cost per event is large and the swings are severe.

Providers worth knowing

Casinos in our table for slots carry at least 2,000 games from 30 or more providers, including all of the above. A casino with a large number of games but few of these names is usually padding the count with low-quality studios.

Jackpots

Progressive network jackpots (Mega Moolah, Mega Fortune, Divine Fortune, WowPot) pool a slice of every bet from every casino offering the game. Mega Moolah has paid out over 18 million euros on a single spin. The odds are lottery-like and the base game is poor value, so treat them as a lottery ticket with a slot attached.

Local and daily jackpots (Red Tiger Daily Jackpots, Relax Dream Drop, Pragmatic Jackpot Play) are smaller, drop more often and are sometimes guaranteed to hit by a set time or amount. They are a better fit if you want jackpot excitement without extreme odds.

Fixed jackpots are simply the maximum win of a standard game, for example 5,000x stake. They are not progressive and are governed by the ordinary volatility of the game.

Playing in demo mode

Demo play runs the same game engine with play money. Use it to learn how the bonus round works, how often it triggers and what a typical session looks like at your intended stake before you deposit. Every provider above offers demo versions, either at the casino or on its own site, and the RTP shown in demo mode is the same as the real-money version at that casino.

Two caveats. First, some players report that demos feel more generous; the providers deny this and the regulators in Malta and the UK require demo and real games to be identical, but note that a demo session with an unlimited balance never ends in a bust, which changes how it feels. Second, progressive jackpot games generally have no demo mode.

Myths about slots

• "The game is due to pay." No. Each spin is independent; the game does not know or care what happened before.
• "Stopping the reels changes the result." No. The result is fixed before the animation starts.
• "Casinos tighten games at weekends." No. The RTP is set in the game file. A casino can choose a lower-RTP version, but it cannot change it between sessions.
• "Betting max improves your odds." Only on the few classic games (Mega Joker, Jackpot 6000) where the higher-stake mode has a higher RTP, and on some progressives where the jackpot needs the maximum bet. On modern video slots the RTP is the same at every stake.
• "Playing with a bonus makes the game pay less." No. The game does not know you have a bonus. Bonus terms may restrict your maximum bet and which games count, which is a different matter; see our wagering guide.
• "A new casino's games pay better to attract players." No. The games are the same provider games at the same or lower settings.
