What you get at a live casino

A live casino is a set of tables run by a studio, streamed in real time. The dealer spins the wheel or deals the cards; you bet through an on-screen layout, and the result is read from the physical table (by optical recognition for cards, by sensors for the wheel) and settled automatically. You can usually chat with the dealer and, at some tables, with other players.

Nearly all live tables are supplied by a handful of studios, and the casino's job is mostly to license them, set which tables appear and manage your money. The studios that matter:

If a casino lists only studios you have never heard of, that is a reason for caution. Live streaming is expensive and the established providers only work with operators that have passed their own checks.

Which live games are available?

Roulette is the most played live game. European single-zero tables are standard; American double-zero tables exist but should be avoided (see online roulette for the house edge figures). Evolution's Lightning Roulette and Pragmatic's Mega Roulette add random multipliers to straight-up bets in exchange for a lower straight-up payout, which raises the house edge from 2.7 percent to roughly 2.9 percent.

Blackjack is the second pillar. Seven-seat tables deal from an eight-deck shoe with the dealer standing on soft 17 at most Evolution tables; the house edge with basic strategy is about 0.5 percent. Baccarat is simple and has a low house edge on the banker bet (1.06 percent). Speed Baccarat and squeeze tables are variations in pace and presentation, not odds.

Game shows such as Crazy Time, Monopoly Live, Sweet Bonanza CandyLand and Funky Time are wheel-based games with bonus rounds. They are entertaining and the RTP is published (typically 95 to 96.5 percent depending on the bet), but they are closer to slots than to table games in volatility.

Poker variants including Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker and Ultimate Texas Hold'em are played against the house, not other players.

What to look for in a live casino

• Studio choice. Evolution plus at least one other major provider gives you a fallback if one studio's tables are full or have problems.
• Table limits that suit you. If you play for 1 to 5 euros a hand, check that low-limit blackjack seats are actually available in the evening (Icelandic time is one to two hours behind most of Europe, which helps).
• Stream quality and latency. A good stream runs at 720p or better with under two seconds' delay. Casinos on cheap hosting show lag between the wheel stopping and the result appearing.
• Native currency. Almost no foreign casino offers ISK tables. Euro tables are standard; some also offer GBP or USD. Your bank converts.
• Bonus terms. As noted in the FAQ, live games rarely count much towards wagering. Casinos with live cashback or reload offers that apply to live play are more useful.
• Withdrawal speed. Live play tends to involve larger single bets and larger balances, so a casino that pays out in hours rather than days matters more. See fast payout casinos.

Live casino compared with software games

Live games are slower. A live roulette round takes 40 to 60 seconds; a software roulette game can resolve in five. Live blackjack deals perhaps 60 hands an hour at a full table. That is a disadvantage if you want action and an advantage if you want your money to last, because the house edge is applied fewer times per hour.

Live games cannot be played for free. Software games nearly always have a demo mode; live tables do not, though you can watch a table without betting at most casinos to get a feel for the pace.

Live games offer some evidence of what happened. The video is recorded and the major providers keep round histories, which helps if you think a result was mis-settled. Software games rely entirely on the audited random number generator and the game history in your account.

Live games are also where table-game rule differences matter most. Two blackjack tables from different studios can differ by a quarter of a percent in house edge because one pays 6:5 on blackjack or deals from a continuous shuffler.
