How online blackjack is played

You and the dealer each receive two cards; the dealer shows one. Cards 2 to 10 count face value, pictures count 10, aces count 1 or 11. The aim is a hand closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. You act first: hit (take a card), stand, double (double your bet and take exactly one card), split (turn a pair into two hands for a second bet) or, where offered, surrender (give up the hand for half the bet). The dealer then draws to a fixed rule, usually standing on 17.

A two-card 21 is a blackjack and pays 3 to 2 at a standard table. Insurance, offered when the dealer shows an ace, is a side bet that the dealer has blackjack; it pays 2 to 1 and is a losing bet in the long run (edge around 7 percent at eight decks). Decline it.

Online, the cards come from a random number generator in software games or a physical shoe at live tables. The rules are always in a help or "i" panel and they are the first thing to read.

What the rules do to the house edge

Blackjack's house edge is not a fixed number. It is the sum of a series of rule effects, and a table can be anywhere from about 0.3 percent to over 2 percent depending on which combination it uses. The main ones, expressed as the approximate change in house edge from a baseline of eight decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double on any two cards, double after split, no surrender:

A typical Evolution live table (eight decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double on any two, double after split, no surrender, no hole card) has a basic-strategy edge of about 0.5 to 0.6 percent. A typical software game from NetEnt or Play'n GO with similar rules is about 0.5 percent. A 6 to 5 table with H17 is around 2 percent, four times worse.

Basic strategy in summary

The full basic strategy chart has around 250 cells, but most of it reduces to a handful of rules. For a multi-deck, dealer-stands-on-soft-17 game:

Hard hands (no ace, or ace counted as 1)

• 8 or less: always hit.
• 9: double against dealer 3 to 6, otherwise hit.
• 10: double against dealer 2 to 9, otherwise hit.
• 11: double against dealer 2 to 10; hit against an ace (double if the dealer hits soft 17).
• 12: stand against dealer 4 to 6, otherwise hit.
• 13 to 16: stand against dealer 2 to 6, otherwise hit.
• 17 or more: always stand.

Soft hands (ace counted as 11)

• Soft 13 to 15 (A-2, A-3, A-4): double against dealer 5 or 6, otherwise hit.
• Soft 16 to 17 (A-5, A-6): double against dealer 3 to 6, otherwise hit.
• Soft 18 (A-7): double against 3 to 6, stand against 2, 7 and 8, hit against 9, 10 and ace.
• Soft 19 or more: stand.

Pairs

• Always split aces and eights.
• Never split tens or fives (play fives as a hard 10).
• Split twos, threes and sevens against dealer 2 to 7.
• Split sixes against dealer 2 to 6.
• Split nines against dealer 2 to 6 and 8 to 9; stand against 7, 10 and ace.
• Split fours only against 5 and 6 when doubling after split is allowed.

Surrender (where offered): hard 16 against dealer 9, 10 or ace; hard 15 against dealer 10.

If the table does not allow doubling after a split, or the dealer hits soft 17, a few cells change. A full chart for the exact rules is easy to find and there is nothing to stop you keeping one open while you play online.

The most expensive common errors are standing on 16 against a 10 out of fear (hit, or surrender if allowed), not doubling on 11, splitting tens, and taking insurance. Fixing those four brings most players close to the 0.5 percent figure.

Variants

Side bets are where the casino recovers what it gives up on the main game. They are entertaining but their edge is five to fifteen times that of the main hand. Skip them unless you accept the cost.

Live blackjack

Live blackjack tables from Evolution, Pragmatic Play Live and Playtech deal from an eight-deck shoe with a real dealer. Seven seats is the standard format; when a table is full you can usually "bet behind" a seated player, which is a bet on their hand with their decisions. Infinite Blackjack, Power Blackjack and similar unlimited-seat games get around the seat limit by dealing one hand that everyone plays independently.

Points specific to live play:

• The rule panel is at the table; typical Evolution rules are eight decks, stand on soft 17, double on any two, double after split, no surrender, no hole card with the original bet only lost to a dealer blackjack.
• Rounds take about a minute at a full table. Expect 50 to 70 hands an hour, against several hundred in software.
• Shoes are usually cut at around 50 percent and reshuffled; some tables use continuous shufflers. Card counting is neither practical nor welcome.
• Minimums run from 1 to 5 euros on standard tables, with 0.50 or 1 euro on Infinite-type games; maximums are 5,000 to 10,000 euros. Low-limit seats fill up in the European evening, so look for tables labelled by limit.
• Bonus wagering almost never counts live blackjack at more than 10 percent, so play live blackjack without a bonus active.

Software blackjack

Software blackjack shuffles after every hand and plays at your own pace. It usually offers demo mode, minimums from 0.10 to 1 euro and multi-hand play (three or five hands at once). Because the rules are printed and the edge is exactly what the rules say, software blackjack is a good place to practise basic strategy before moving to live tables, where the pace is set by the dealer.

Look for 3 to 2 payouts everywhere (no 6 to 5 tables in the lobby is a good sign), dealer standing on soft 17, double after split, a choice of live studios, and clear rule panels on every game.
